Global Learning Courses

What are Global Learning Courses?

Global learning courses provide students with insight into what is going on around the world without having to leave their classrooms. Everyone deserves to have access to global information, which makes these courses convenient as they are easily accessible to people from different backgrounds and levels of experience in college. Each course is carefully crafted to provide students with the knowledge and tools they need to make a difference in the world.

01

Sociology of Gender

This class is tailored to develop and guide our understanding and awareness of gender in society. It is essential to analyze how society is organized and the gender stereotypes and hierarchies involved. The course aimed to encourage students to engage in global and cultural issues related to gender, culture, and society. By the end of the course, I have gained the knowledge and analytical skills necessary to identify and analyze the gender issues that affect our everyday lives. One assignment that particularly stuck with me is applying what we learned in the course to current events and how they influence our lives every day. I specifically chose to write about women in the sports industry and how they are discriminated against and paid less just because of their sex and gender identity. It is important to recognize these biases so that we can find ways to change this culture that has made its way deep into societal issues.

Introduction to Environmental Science

This course took me on a journey of discovery as we were able to explore the challenges facing our environment and use our knowledge to develop ways we can make a positive impact. This course provided a comprehensive look at environmental degradation and how human influences primarily cause it. We delved into natural systems on a global scale and analyzed our carbon footprint as individuals. I have also learned about climate change, pollution, desertification, loss of biodiversity and declining water sources. Together, we explore ways we can make sustainable changes in our lives to help improve the environment for future generations across the globe as this does not only apply to our own backyard.

Marine Protected Areas (MPA)

This course focused on the design and management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Using social and biological concepts, we conducted an in-depth analysis of MPAs and how we could improve them to enhance its effectiveness. An assignment that has stuck with me is the in-depth analysis of the MPA within Mergui Archipelago Lampi Marine National Park, located in Myanmar. My group and I were able to evaluate both the environment and cultures/religious practices within the area to suggest improvements that will not only preserve the biological diversity within the location, but also provide education of sustainable usage of the resources available to those who live there. This is important for global learning as we are able to gain more insight on the relatedness of the environment and the religious/cultures that are practiced around the world.
