Global Learning Experiences

During my time at FIU, I participated in a variety of experiences that helped to shape who I am today. Below are some of the experiences that have greatly inspired me to become more involved in my community and broaden my perspective of the world we live in.

Americorps & Feeding South Florida

My passion for volunteering has taken me to places where I can help make a difference in people's lives. During my time at Broward College as a Peer Leader serving under Americorps, I had the opportunity to volunteer with the food pantry, where I packaged food and hygiene items for college-wide distributions and provided students the support they needed. There is no greater joy than helping others and seeing their faces light up with a sense of hope and encouragement.

DEI Committee Member with Phi Delta Epsilon

Phi Delta Epsilon is committed to making a difference in the world by creating physicians with integrity. As a DEI committee member, I believe that educating our members about diversity, equity, and inclusion is a vital step towards creating a better society and providing adequate health care. To that end, we have made numerous presentations on a variety of topics related to DEI, such as Black History, Medical Terms in ASL, and Language Barriers (medical terminology in different languages and their translations).

FIU Mentoring Collective

The FIU Mentoring Collective is a community of mentors who provide guidance to incoming college freshman. As a mentor, I understand that this transition period can be overwhelming for students, and they may feel uncertain about navigating their academic journey. I have experience dealing with students from various backgrounds and have participate in trainings to effectively provide support and encouragement along the way so that students have a smooth transition and succeed in their academic journey.

The Tuesday Times Roundtable (TTR) and StartUP FIU: Hacker Nation

TTR events are extremely resourceful, providing opportunities to discuss and learn about current global issues and trends. With a lineup of experienced presenters, students can expect to engage their minds in a truly global learning experience. It is a platform that exposes participants to unique and interesting topics, helping them broaden their perspectives. I was lucky enough to participate in four TTR events, and my favorite ones were "A Wide View of Health Equity: Social Determinants of Health" and "Healing the Everglades: Indigenous Perspectives from PBS's 'Native America' featuring Betty Osceola (Panther Clan)". Both were eye-opening experiences that allowed me to learn from experts about human health and the relationship between culture and environment. These TTR's were the most impactful as studying Biological Sciences is something that I am passionate about. The other TTR events that I have attended were "The World's Women: An International Look at Women's Rights" and "Empowering Rural Communities through International Collaboration" with Blue Missions Group.

With StartUP FIU: Hacker Nation, I was able to engage in conversation with fellow FIU students and Robert Hacker, who facilitated discussion regarding AI, Philosophy, Design Thinking, and so much more!
